Yirgashewa Teshome: Ethiopian Filmmaker

Yirgashewa Teshome is an Ethiopian filmmaker and Founding Director of the Ethiopian International Film Festival (EARTHOPIAN). 

He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Economics and his Master’s degree in Regional & Local Development Studies from Addis Ababa University.  As a filmmaker and head of the festival for the last two decades, he has developed vast experience in participating in a number of international film festivals both as a guest and a jury member as well as presenting his work globally in Africa, Europe and USA. 

The latest English book publication “Economic Evaluation of Film Industry in Ethiopia ”and “ A Film History in Ethiopia; from Grand Palace to ETHIOFFEST” have been published for the global market by Lap Publishers (Germany). In addition, many of Yirgashewa Teshome’s research articles have been published in internationally acclaimed journals and recently he was honored to be a jury member of the BRICS Film Festival and a guest of the 46th Moscow International Film Festival in April 2024. 

Ethiopia recently joined BRICS so the selection of Yirgashewa Teshome as a jury member of the BRICS Film Festival the day after Ethiopia became a member country of this organization was significant and made this event historic. 

During his stay in Moscow, Yirgashewa anticipated discussing the partnership between the two festivals and cross-cultural relations between Ethiopia and Russia with various stakeholders.
