Using essential oils to make homemade sanitizer and disinfectant

When pandemic and epidemic occur at different times, herbs and spices have always been used as a secret weapon to fight infection. Using homemade remedies (i.e., herbs and spices) for various medical conditions has been a tradition and practice among Ethiopian people. Our spicy foods contain plenty of herbs and spices as ingredients which are added and served in our cuisine and which have medicinal benefits. By using more of these spices and herbs directly or indirectly helps the individual’s body to boost immunity, increase blood flow, aid digestion, and enhance detoxification.  

 Essential oils have been used as disinfectant, relaxants and treatment for a variety of conditions. They can be active ingredients in various personal care and skincare products. They work as a natural disinfectant to clean surfaces, skin, and even clothes usually applied topically to fight against disease-causing pathogens and viruses. In addition knowing the recommended daily dosage of essential oils, is crucial to the individual before using them. Regarding Essential oils, children, the elderly, people with underlying medical conditions, and pregnant women need to be very cautious and aware of when they are taking the oils and applying daily. Oils also help relieve anxiety that relaxes both body and mind.

  1. Thyme oil: – It has antispasmodic and antibacterial properties. It reduces coughs and shortens the duration of respiratory tract infections.
  2. Tea tree oil: – contains antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. Studies suggest that It can inhibit the influenza virus entry to the host cell and can be used as a natural disinfectant to kill germs in the air and also on surfaces.
  3. Lemon oil: – It has antifungal and antioxidant properties. It is a natural disinfectant that fights viruses and the common cold.
  4. Eucalyptus oil: Effective in easing congestion, chesty coughs, thinning mucus and it aids seasonal flu.
  5. Frankincense oil: Helps reduce stress reactions and negative emotions and boosts the immune system. It is astringent and can kill harmful germs and bacteria

DIY Hand sanitizer

  • 15 drops of pure Tea Tree oil
  • 6 drops of lemon oil 
  • 2 teaspoon Aloe vera gel 

DIY Disinfectant spray

  • One cup rubbing alcohol
  • 15 drops of Thyme oil
  • 8 drops Eucalyptus oil
  • 8 drops of Tea tree oil

The other possible way to use an essential oil is to put in a diffuser; 3-5 essential oil drops that can be applied and will keep your surroundings healthy.
