The 6 elements of interior design

When designing a space there are six elements that you should take into consideration: space, form, line, pattern, color, and texture. The harmony of these elements will impact the functionality and atmosphere.

  1. Space: the size and shape of the room will impact functionality. It is important to be able to assess and balance the given space, from a 3-dimensional aspect, to the function assigned to it. Ergonomic factors should also be considered when finding the balance between the two.
  2. Form: the shape of the features within a space. It can be geometric forms found in lighting fixtures or found in natural elements.Form gives the space personality. It is important to get the right balance of geometric shapes to natural forms so that spaces don’t become over or underwhelming.
  3. Lines: this goes hand in hand with form. When you enter a room, your eyes naturally gravitate to the lines that exist in a space. It can be natural lines of a wall or can be by design. Some lines are inviting and some are deterring, so be cautious of how you use lines to impact your space
  4. Light is a very important aspect. In conjunction with color and pattern, light used in a space can make or break the mood.
  5. Color and texture: color and texture can be used to draw attention to or away from certain design features. Both are found everywhere in nature and are very important to creating the mood desired.
