Midako Publishing – Enabling Children to Read!

Midako have recently published a 200 page textbook on reading comprehension and twelve supplementary books.  This textbook will teach early readers how to understand the main idea of a text, who the characters are, the setting, and the plot. It will also teach them cause and effect and comparisons and contrasting.

Each chapter has a number of writing, speaking and comprehension activities and two stories/texts. After reading the two texts children will be asked to make connections – text to self-connections, text to text connections and text to world connections. This will help them have a deeper understanding of the text and a better understanding of themselves and the world around them. Each chapter also has two separate supplementary books and your children will be asked to write a book report.

As always this book was tested with children and they had loads of fun. Why? You may ask! One reason is because it has activities that requires children to ask question to their parents, or guardians, or/and their friends, and write about the answers. Every lesson has two ways to write, speak and read and read.

Midako Publishing of children’s books is a general interest publisher of quality children’s books including picture books, chapter books and reading learning materials.

Tsion Kiros is the founder of Midako Publishing, based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Since 2014, Midako Publishing has released more than 200 titles written in Ethiopian languages, including Amharic and Oromo, as well as English. “My number one priority is to get children to read before they are in enrolled in grade one. As it stands now, and according to the government of Ethiopia, a significant number of students in Ethiopia read 0 words correctly at grade 2.* This does not have to be. If children are taught with the right approach and enough resources they can learn to read Amharic before they even get to grade 1”.

Our test group students have shown us that children do learn to read and do fall in love with reading. Our major challenge now – with our test group – is producing enough books to satisfy their reading needs.

Midako picture books and chapter books can be found at Mega Book Store in Addis Ababa.
