Mastewal Alemu is the Founder and Creative Director of Mastewal Alemu, a high-end fashion brand based in Addis using meticulously crafted hand-woven 100% cotton fabrics, skillfully produced on traditional looms by local artisan weavers promoting traditional craftsmanship while creating unique and environmentally conscious fashion pieces.
Mastewal brings a unique wealth of knowledge from her background as a fashion design lecturer. After Mastewal earned her degree in fashion design at the Ethiopian Institute of Textile and Fashion Technology, Bahir Dar University she lectured there for five years. Her master’s thesis project focused on improving traditional fabrics to craft them in export-standard quality and be competitive internationally. She launched her first capsule collection at the international Cotton, Textile, and Apparel value chain in Africa. After positive feedback and admiration from international textile and fashion experts, this led to the launch of her own business.
The brand is distinguished by a passion for textiles, local and ethical production, sustainability and embracing a zero-waste design approach, including the responsible use of resources. Working with organizations like Hub of Africa Fashion Week and African Mosaique collectively helped her to develop her own strong collection. Mastewal has presented collections at their annual fashion events. 90% of her customers come from the diplomatic community in Addis.
Vogue Italy highlighted her collection as a top brand to keep an eye on in Ethiopia. This led to participation in the Moscow Fashion Week and being highlighted by international fashion magazines like ELLE, COSMOPOLITAN, L’OFFICIEL UK, FIBRE2FASHION etc. It proved
a game-changer for the business. Their goal is
to become a leading sustainable fashion brand in Africa.
