Fashion, in conversation with my mother

  1. What was the landscape of fashion in Ethiopia in the
    60s and 70s?

Pleated skirts were popular in the late 50s and 60s,
straight and Parimode skirts, A-shaped, flared and
gathered dresses/skirts, among the modern generation
to name a few. Hip-hugger skirts and pants with wide
belts were stylish among the youth. The 60s was also
the mini-skirt era. In the 70s Channel fashion and bell
bottom pants set the trend. Locally, Ethiopian traditional
dresses also evolved where modern design included long,
straight and A-shaped dresses with shawl. Shema were
being woven with shiny, silky yarn in various colors to
accommodate this trend.

  1. I remember you making clothing for us when we
were kids. Where did that inspiration come from?

My mom used to give me leftover yarns and teach me
how to knit. She would bring scraps of material from the
tailors and show me how to make dresses for my dolls. I
started making dresses and blouses when I was in high
school. There was a Mennonite bookstore where I used
to buy Simplicity and McCall sewing patterns, as well as
magazines. My first sewing product was what you see in
this picture.
As you mentioned, it was my favorite hobby and pleasure
to knit and sew for you guys.

  1. Were there any big Ethiopian designers in your time? If
    so who?

There is only one I remember. Woizero Tsion Andom who
took Ethiopian dresses, and capes to another level.

  1. Where was the influence of fashion in your generation?

I would say Europe, especially France and Italy.

So much I would love to share but we will stop here for
now.
