The effect of hunting on Ethiopia’s elephants has been compounded by decades of habitat losses, increase in human population as well as agriculture and livestock expansion within areas which have historically been the home and habitat for Ethiopian elephants.
Each of Ethiopia’s elephant populations have been gradually reduced in size and range.
The Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA) works hard on protecting the wildlife from illegal poachers. They prepared a project proposal to receive help “Strengthen Law Enforcement and Anti-Poaching at Mago National Park in Respons COVID-19 and an Escalation in Elephant Poaching in Ethiopia” following the tragic slaughter and killing of Elephants in the Mago National Park in 2020.
Financial support has now been pledged from the Africa Elephant fund (AEF), for safeguarding and protection work. The Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA) on behalf of the Government of Ethiopia, is immensely grateful to the United Nations African Elephant Fund (AEF) for this vital support.
