“A visual dialogue exploring the intersection of Basquiat’s legacy with Ethiopian contemporary art”
Demam is a female-run small business. Deman in Amharic means beautiful both on the outside and within; someone who radiates great energy.
Yulyana, along with her team at Demam, is producing cosmetic products such as healthy skin cleansers and masks. Primary ingredients include quasil and turmeric. With a natural product consciousness movement worldwide, these types of businesses are poised to grow exponentially in the long run.
Qasil is a natural powder made from the dried leaves of the gob tree or Ziziphus jujube, which is native to East Africa. Women in the region have used qasil for centuries to exfoliate, brighten, and soften their skin. Qasil can be used in a variety of ways.
Ethiopia is one of the largest producers and exporters of turmeric in Africa. The majority of turmeric produced in Ethiopia is consumed domestically, but a small portion is exported to neighboring countries, Asia, the Middle East, and the United States.
Along with the “Cosmetic Sector for Young People”, ITS Nuove Tecnologie della Vita Academy’s course organized by UNIDO, with funding from AICS, Demam is aiming to expand into a wide range of products.
