10 years old Ethiopian Soliyana Giza has won the 2020 AfriCAN Code Challenge (ACC) competition a newly launched continent-wide tech competition where young people were invited to create an educational computer game. According to organizers Soliyana’s submission called “Mathstainement” won the Pan-African prize. The ACC competition invited youths to create an educational computer game. She won first place for the Pan-African prize with participants from 54 countries of which the top 3 contestants were all females aged 10 – 16 years, with Soliyana aged10 years old. Children from 54 countries shared their vision about future education with their entries. Soliana showed ability with her game design to devise a project that would solve community issues by coding and communicating. Her work also included an awareness about Covid-19.
The AfriCAN Code Challenge is an exciting AfriCAN Code Challenge where youth aged 8 – 16 were tasked with coding a game using the Scratch programming language that connects with the ‘Courageous Coders’ theme to answer the question: “How will your tech change the future of education?”
In her video presentation Soliyana explains that her app “is not only a game,” but also “creates awareness about COVID-19.”
