Bisrat Shibabaw: Consummate Artist

Solo Exhibition: 1 – 3 November 2024 @ Moa Anbessa Art Studio Gallery, Kazanchis

Recognized at home and abroad as a premiere painter, Bisrat has secured numerous solo and group exhibitions in Ethiopia, China, France and the prestigious University of Florida Harn Museum of Arts, with work also in the USA Art in Embassies Collection and with many leading Ethiopian art collectors.

Bisrat is soft-spoken and called a ‘consummate artist’ for her work ethos. Born in Addis Ababa in 1965, she is a 1983 graduate of the Addis Ababa University Ale School of Fine Arts and Design (AAUASFAD) with a Master’s Degree from St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, Russia, 1992.

Currently an instructor at her Alma Mater (AAUASFAD), Bisrat is impacting generations of visual artists. Simultaneously she is creating intriguing visually verbose paintings and collages in her flora-filled studio, nestled in an Addis alcove.

Renowned artist, Tesfaye Urgessa, who represented Ethiopia at the Venice Biennial, recalled in an interview with ArtReview, “Bisrat Shibabaw…laid the foundation for my painting skills and instilled in me the discipline to pursue them. They (Bisrat and Mezgebu Tesema) were my major influences … serving as my first gateway into the world of painting….”

King of Charcoal, Prince Merid Tafesse states, “Bisrat is one of the most profound Ethiopian artists of our time, uninhibited, curious and confident in her application of various media and subject matters. My wife, Dr. Desta and I are proud to present her work at Moa Anbessa A.S.G.”

Bisrat’s self-titled solo exhibition is on view from Friday, November 1 – Sunday, November 3 in the “SALON SERIES 2017/2024” hosted at Moa Anbessa Art Studio Gallery (A.S.G.) in Kazanchis.
