Maheder Admasu created Maheder Food Processing PLC in 2013. With a passion for home prepared food, Maheder had a vision to develop her food business – to not only cater to the local market but fulfil an increasing international demand for traditional Ethiopian cuisine, namely readymade wots, spices and sauces.
Maheder’s drive to see her business succeed, led her to become a finalists in a national venture competition. Her business idea in the competition was to provide packed traditional foods, stew, sauces, spices, and drinks. What makes her business unique today is that she distributes traditional wots and other products to supermarkets, hotels and individuals in Addis Ababa. There’s a testing center so that customers can order directly after sampling products. Her products go through thorough and frequent quality control checks conducted by the sub-city. The company has 7 employees, 3 are female and 7 are youth. Management consists of 3 young females. Maheder Food understands the importance of CSR; for instance, an additional charge of 25 cents applied to all products sold directly. The funds once accumulated are used to prepare food which is donated as meals for underprivileged children. Female staff members are also provided with meals, uniforms, and their own restroom facility (including soap). In the area of environmental sustainability, the company generates zero paper waste and separates recyclable materials from waste.
