Hana Kidane (19) is an Ethiopian activist fighting for social change and climate justice. Recently she went to the Embassy of Sweden in Addis to assume the position of Ambassador Hans Lundquist as part of #GirlsTakeOver to commemorate the International Day of the Girl. The Embassy of Sweden and Plan International Ethiopia organized GirlsTakeover to promote girls’ potential as leaders while also highlighting gender issues.
Hanna met with the Ambassador and discussed important issues such as gender equality and climate justice, both of which she is very passionate about. They discussed Sweden’s role in promoting gender equality in various initiatives, as well as Sweden’s contribution to protecting the environment and preserving biodiversity.
In her role as acting Ambassador Hanna met the various heads of sections and led program staff through an insightful presentation on ClimateChange and its impact on women. She also expressed her desire to capitalize on her experiences to address issues such as girl’s education and land rights, with a special focus on rural girls and women. Hanna will also write a letter to the Swedish Foreign Ministry outlining the improvements she would want to see in Ethiopia, particularly in the areas of gender equality and climate justice.
GirlsTakeOver is a global movement calling for social and political change to break down barriers and discrimination that continue to hold girls back. Girls participate in the movement by occupying spaces where they are rarely seen or heard, demonstrating that they have the right to be there without being silenced or disregarded.
