Wellness – What EXACTLY is it?!

We constantly hear and read the word Wellness everywhere. On talk shows, in magazines, among friends and wellness center’s are opening up everywhere in the city.
But what does wellness really mean ?
According to the WHO, wellness is a state of complete physical mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease.
So for us to say we are “well” we need to have our physical, mental, and emotional state “well”. I mostly get asked questions such as “will I lose weight doing yoga or exercise ?” “ I have this or that physical / mental issue so will exercise or yoga help me with this?” My answer to all mostly is “what is your lifestyle like ? “ because adding yoga or exercise into your life will provide a certain benefit but just doing that alone is not the solution. We are holistic beings and we have to start looking at ourselves like that. There needs to be a unity between these three : physical, mental and emotional. If we keep our stress level high even if we are eating proper food and drinking a proper amount of water, we will still have stress chemicals in our body that will make us gain weight and our mental state might be affected.
Next month I will address the balance of Exercise and Emotion as part of our overall well-being .
