Why are horses so fascinating?

Surely both their strength and beauty are intriguing, as is their intelligence, eagerness to learn and their gentle behavior – despite their size, (as one of the bigger mammals walking the earth).  For thousands of years horses have helped us humans, whether in battle or on the farm, for weddings or funerals. And today, many Ethiopian communities honor a close relationship with their horses as a vital part of their cultural heritage. But even in Ethiopia, the duties and purposes of horses are going through a transition. While in rural areas horses are still used for farming or transportation, horses are becoming more of a sport and leisure partner in urban areas, and are an essential part of cultural festivities and events. In Addis Ababa alone, there are almost a dozen private and government affiliated equestrian clubs and stables, organized under the Ethiopian Equestrian Association, which is affiliated to the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), and collaborates with the Ethiopian Traditional Sports Federation.

Show jumping competitions always attract the crowds. It is impressive how a horse, despite its instinct of flight, builds up enough trust to take a rider over scary looking fences, through flags, loud music and cheering crowds; their ability to mirror the mood and feelings of humans, however, might be the most fascinating of all. Because a horse is a master in reading a human’s mind and will always know who you really are; it needs to trust but not fear you. But once you create that bond and build a true partnership with your horse, there is nothing like galloping across the plains; it is like flying, true freedom!
