Letsedbet Gidey – long distance runner breaks record

Letesenbet Gidey (born 20 March 1998) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner born in Endameskel in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia. She was the fourth child born to her parents, having two brothers and a sister and grew up on the family farm.

She won a 3000 m + 2000 m steeplechase run at the Ethiopian School Championships in 2012.

She is the 2015 and 2017 U20 Cross Country World Champion, the fourth woman to win back-to-back titles. At the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Letesenbet won the silver medalist in the 10,000m.

Letesenbet Gidey in October set a new record in the women’s 5,000 at a specially held track meet in Valencia. Gidey’s time of 14:06.62 was almost five seconds better than the previous record set by fellow Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba in Oslo in 2008.
