Ethiopia’s harvest in unique! In most countries harvest of Hass variety occurs between November to May. In Tigray they are harvesting in June and expect to have a second harvest in November. This places Ethiopia at a huge comparative advantage for Avocado production and primarily for export.
Ethiopia has favorable agroclimatic conditions to produce and export avocado and with growing private sector interest in avocado, it presents a huge potential for generating the much needed foreign capital. Consumption rates of avocado fruits globally has doubled between 2005 to 2020, reaching 5 million tons per year. This value is expected to double again by 2030.
The age of Avocado is here and Ethiopia needs to take full advantage of this opportunity to capture much needed access to capital, modern technology, and new markets to spur agricultural growth and employment.
